Have you ever had chickenpox? After exposure to chickenpox, the virus that virus (varicella-zoster) is caused in the body, residing in certain nerve cells. This virus can become active again in the form of a disease called shingles which results in pain and blisters. The elderly are particularly at risk of developing shingles. It is important that older people and those involved in the care of older people know about shingles.

The onset of shingles is similar to chickenpox in that it produces a feeling of being sick and rashes on the body or face. The main difference is when these diseases develop - that is, chickenpox affects mostly children while shingles will still occur in adults, usually after the age of 50. Shingles is rare (occurring in only 1-5 people). Once activated, the virus travels along the nerve paths to the surface of the skin produces skin rashes and pain.

Because shingles is caused by a virus present in the body of previous infection of chickenpox, it is not contagious. However, you can catch the virus that causes chickenpox in individuals recently infected. If you have never had chickenpox before, it may be best to stay away from people who develop shingles. Recently, a vaccine has been developed that can keep you from getting shingles. It is only available for the elderly.

Risk Factors

Although there is no way to detect if the virus becomes active sleep in someone who has recovered from chickenpox, there are some risk factors to the activation of the virus more likely. These include:

The advanced age. This may be due to the fact that older people have more difficulty in the fight against infection. The risk of shingles increases dramatically after age 70.
Immunodifficiency - difficulty fighting infections. If the immune system is compromised for reasons other than those due to aging, you are more likely to develop shingles. Factors that can weaken the immune system include HIV infection, cancer, cancer treatment, organ transplants, and physical or mental stress.

Shingles symptoms

People who develop shingles often complain about:

Burning, tingling, numbness or skin

Feeling flu-like illness - chills, fever, stomach pain, headache or

Fluid filled blisters

The skin is sensitive to touch

Mild itching to severe pain

There is a natural progression which proceeds as follows:

1. Tingling or burning of the skin occurs.

2. few days later, a red rash is visible.

3. the rash develops into blisters that dry out and crust over within a few days.

4. The overall duration of the disease can last 3-5 weeks.

Other complications that can result from shingles blisters are due to become infected and cause scarring or blindness if they develop near the eyes. Other people experience hearing loss, paralysis of the short face, or swelling of the brain (encephalitis).

Treatment shingles

If you think you may have shingles, it is important to consult a doctor as soon as possible to treat the virus. Shingles is often treated at home with medications prescribed by your doctor. These drugs can be antiviral drugs, analgesics, anti-depressants. If these drugs are used within 72 hours of rash developing, they can actually reduce the duration of the disease and the risk of other complications that may arise. Although most people only get shingles once, it is possible for her to reproduce again.

There are things you can do to relieve the symptoms of shingles if it develops. These include:

Get enough rest, avoid stress and eat well

Simple exercises such as walking or stretching if it is safe and not too painful

Applying a washcloth wet and cold blisters

Doing things that take the mind off the pain as watching television, reading, or spending time with your family and friends

Relaxing or listening to music you like

Talking about your pain and emotions with others who you trust

Ask for help when you need it

Some people may experience continuous pain after virus recovery. This pain is called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) and usually affects areas of the body that had rashes before. The pain was described as sharp, stabbing, and stabbing and can interfere with daily active for the elderly who develop shingles. Doctors may prescribe medications for persistent effects of PHN which the elderly are most at risk of.
